What a performance by Francis Mourey (FDJ-Bigmat) last Saturday on the 3rd round of the Cyclo-Cross World Cup in Koksijde - Belgium!
Weather conditions were dantesque, the sandy track is one of the most technical of the season, and Francis just did a strong race. After the 1st half of the race he crossed the line in the lead and was then the only rider capable to follow the current World Champion Niels Albert. That was before the come-back of Sven Nys. After a slow start (20sec gap to the lead after 1 lap), he progressively caught up all the riders, one by one. In the last lap but one, he passed Mourey and caught Albert. Physically, the 3 riders were very close, but Nys was technically superior, passing the sand sections on his bike where his opponents had to get off their pedals to run with their bike on their shoulder.
In the last lap, Mourey was back in Albert’s rear wheel and close to pass 2nd, but will finally kept his 3rd place. That’s his first World Cup podium since 2 years and for sure his best result of the season.
He’s now 6th at the World Cup overall.
