It was the first big test for Thibaut Pinot: A 5 stage race with a time trial, two stages with a climb finish and opponents such as Fabio Aru, Alberto Contador or Geraint Thomas. That sounded promising!
And as since the beginning of this season, Pinot certainly lived up to the hopes placed in him. Constant and always well placed in the climbs, and confirming his progress in the time trial.
He finished 6th on Stage 2, dropping 5 small seconds to the stage winner Luis León Sánchez.
On the third stage, a time trial of 18kms won by Fabian Cancellara, Pinot took a solid 12th place and stayed well placed (5th) for the final overall standings.
On the last stage with arrival at the top, it's this time Alberto Contador, who did not do so well until then, who flew to go and pick the stage win. Behind Aru, Pinot and Antunes arrived in this order, 20 seconds behind the winner of the day. 3rd on this last stage, Pinot moved up one place at the overall and finished 4th in the final standings! Geraint Thomas won the event for the second consecutive year.
Next goal for Pinot: Tirreno-Adriatico!
